Short Review - Dead Island (PC)

One cool thing about the TV show The Walking Dead was the heroes bashing the brains of zombies in with melee weapons. While Black Ops allowed this to an extent, there were a limited number of melee weapons, and the ones you could use left you very vulnerable to zombie attacks. In Fallout and Skyrim you have a lot of weapons to use, but the zombies in those games aren't like the walkers on the show due to how they behaved.

Finally my quest for this kind of experience ended when I learned about Dead Island. While I heard a wide range of mixed criticism, I never really though much about the game until after I watched Walking Dead. So I was looking around for other possible alternatives and then I spotted it and decided to give it a go.

The best thing is the sense of wonder and amazement as you walk around a simply gorgeous island (a friend noted that the game looked amazing but when I told them what the game was about, they couldn't believe it). In the game there are literally tons of weapons to use from Axes to Metal Pipes to Brass Knuckles and more. In fact there's a larger emphasis on melee weapons than guns. There's also a lot of scavenging which again reminds me of the zombie TV show which I admire so much.

There will probably be a follow-up to this in the near future but first impressions are very good indeed. There's a sense of danger and urgency about everything, so you have to look around everywhere to make sure you don't get attacked from a blind spot. Excuse me while I go splatter some zombie heads!
